Exploring the ICSE Grading System and Assessment Methods

ICSE grading system

The Council for the Indian Secondary Certificate Examination (CISCE), a private board of secondary education in India, administers the ICSE exam, also known as the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education, for students in Class 10. The administrative center for the CISCE board is located in New Delhi. The ICSE Class 10 and ISC Class 12 board exams are annually administered by this, one of India’s most well-known educational boards.

Under the leadership of Education Minister Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, the All-India Certificate Examination Conference was organized in 1952. The main goal of the conference was to switch out the international Cambridge School Certificate Examination with an All-India exam. The conference decided on the conference agenda for the Council’s formation.

The Council was established as a society by the Societies Registration Act of 1860 in December 1967. The Council was recognised as a “public” exam-conducting body in 1973 under the Delhi School Education Act.

ICSE grading system

  • A nine-number grading scale, with 1 being the highest grade and 9 being the lowest, makes up the ICSE Grading System 2024. Excellent achievement is indicated by grades 1 and 2. Grades 3, 4, and 5 denote a passing grade with credit, grades 6 and 7 denote a passing grade, and grades 8 and higher denote a failing grade. This grading scheme is employed by the board to evaluate students’ performance.
  • The ICSE Class 10th and ISC 12th Class exams use the identical CISCE grading scale. The distinction between internal assessments and external exams is the sole one in the grading scheme. The ICSE Class X and XII grading scale is provided here.
  • The class 10th ICSE Grading System bases student evaluations on percentile rankings. According to the grading scale, the top 5% of pupils receive an A, followed by the next 15% with a B. Students receive grades in this manner based on how well they treat others.

ICSE grading pattern

There is an ICSE percentage calculation pattern for 2023-24. Let’s look at how to calculate the percentage of marks of 10th class ICSE.

To further understand how to compute the ICSE percentage, let’s look at an example. English language and literature are included in the list of Group I Compulsory Subjects, along with Hindi/Regional as a Second Language and Social Studies (History & Civics and Geography). Group II consists of any two subjects; in this case, mathematics and science (which includes physics, chemistry, and biology) are included; and Group III is made up of any one of the Optional Subjects. The student received the following grades in each subject:

English Language: 90
English Literature: 80
Hindi: 65
Mathematics: 70
Physics: 80
Chemistry: 90
Biology: 75
History & Civics: 85
Geography: 95
Optional subject: 60

To calculate the percentage, we need to take into consideration the best five subjects, excluding the subject with the lowest marks. In this case, the student’s best five subjects are English Language and Literature, Hindi, Math’s, Science, and Social Studies.

So, the total marks obtained in considered the best 5 subjects are:

[90 (English Language) + 80 (English Literature)]/2 + 65 Hindi +70 Math + [(80 + 90 + 75)/3] Science + ((85 + 95)/2) Social Studies = 391.66

The maximum marks in the best five subjects considered are:

100 (English Language + Literature)) + 100 (Hindi) + 100 (Mathematics) +100 (Science) + 100 (Social Studies) = 500

Using the formula:

ICSE percentage calculator-

Percentage = (Total Marks Obtained in Best Five Subjects / Maximum Marks) x 100

The percentage obtained by the student is:

(391.66/500) x 100 = 78.3%

Therefore, the student obtained 78.3% in the ICSE board exams. Most of us don’t know how ICSE marks are calculated but now it is clear.
